Dickens Street Upgrade
Planning Started: 2007
Construction Started: 2008
The second stage of the Dickens Street upgrade, encompassing the precinct between Hastings Street and Dalton Street, will create a more attractive and pedestrian-friendly shopping area.
Landscaping themes used in the redevelopment will echo those developed for other upgraded areas of the CBD.
Council engineers are managing the project, a role traditionally undertaken by the contractor. Their focus will be the timely completion of the upgrade and to ensure good access to businesses in the area while construction is underway.
Started in mid-June, the first phase of work in Upper Dickens Street involves replacing underground services - sewer and stormwater pipes and power cables.
Vehicles are able to access the area from Dalton Street, and traffic is restricted one-way, from west to east, until the project's scheduled completion date of early November.
Napier City Council has consulted the public about the redevelopment and is keeping stakeholders informed about construction plan with fortnightly newsletters.
Plans of the new layout can be viewed in the council foyer on Hastings Street and in the window of Copyworld in lower Dickens Street.
