Transfer Station Weighbridge
Planning started: Mid-2009
Construction started: June 2010
Completed: December 2010
A second weighbridge has now been installed at the Redclyffe Refuse Transfer Station. The old weighbridge, has now been relocated next to a new weighbridge. The new layout will allow all vehicles using the transfer station to be weighed in and out, and charges will be based on the difference in weight.
Project manager Ricki Freemantle says the changes will mean very little for those dumping small amounts of rubbish. The new layout will allow a fairer, user-pays system, especially for those offloading large loads.
“The more you take,” he points out, “the more you will pay – and that’s as fair as you can make it.”
The upgraded facility is capable of weighing all vehicles, including those with large trailers.
The Council will continue to encourage the separation of recyclables and greenwaste, with re-located facilities at the entrance to the transfer station, to help divert waste that would otherwise end up in the Omarunui Landfill.
A reduced rate will still apply for loads of greenwaste.
