Tiki Taane Mahuta
After a stunning 2015 debut, the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu season of Tiki Taane Mahuta returns to tour Aotearoa in 2017, featuring live performance from the iconic Tiki Taane.
Tiki Taane Mahuta is presented in partnership between Taki Rua and Aotearoa Aerial Theatre Company. Combining theatre, aerial performance, contemporary dance, kapa haka, mau rākau and hip hop, Tiki Taane Mahuta is one of New Zealand’s largest nationally-devised productions
Created by Taki Rua Artistic Director Tānemahuta Gray and set to live music from iconic musicians Tiki Taane and Shapeshifter’s Sambora, Tiki Taane Mahuta is a proud expression of Aotearoa identity.
Tiki Tane Mahuta is a story about love and tragic loss. When a fatal car crash takes away the love of Karen’s life, and the father of her unborn child, it is up to the next generation to repair the rift between broken families. Karen’s son, guided by his father’s ancestral lineage, is able to forge a path of forgiveness. Tatau pounamu. A gift of reconciliation and new beginnings.
Both the show’s narrative and soundtrack emerge from award-winning Tiki Taane albums Past, Present, Future and In The World of Light. Tiki Taane and Shapeshifter’s Sambora play live, supporting some of New Zealand’s best performers from the worlds of kapa haka, dance and theatre.
The staging also features audiovisual projection from Aotearoa’s leading multimedia designers.
