Q. What qualifications or experience do I need to stand?
None. Elected members come from all walks of life. All you really need to be an elected member is willingness to participate. You must be a New Zealand citizen and enrolled as an elector of a local authority. (You do not have to live in the area you wish to stand for).
Q. How long is the term of Council?
Q. If I live within Napier, but also own another residential property in Napier, does this make me eligible for two votes?
No. Each person is only entitled to one set of voting papers.
Q. I have difficulty with mobility, and do not own a car. Will there be any trouble finding an accessible polling booth on election day?
Napier City local body elections are carried out by postal vote. Your papers should arrive around three weeks before election day. This should give you sufficient time to do your voting, mail your papers back in the pre-paid envelope, or to have them dropped back into the Council offices.
Q. I will be out of New Zealand before the election and may not get my papers in time. How will I be able to vote?
You will be eligable to make a Special Vote. This may be carried out any time, within Council office hours, over the three week period prior to election day. Alternatively you may wish to make private arrangements to have your papers forwarded to you overseas.
Q. What happens if I accidentally damage or destroy my voting papers?
If your voting papers are accidentally damaged or destroyed you can come in to Council before election day and make a special vote.
Q. What is the Council policy on Election Hoardings/Signs?
