Council approves lower fees for MTG

It will soon cost $2.50 for primary students and $4.50 for secondary students to visit MTG Hawke’s Bay when participating in the museum’s school education programme.

The lowered fees will come into effect from 1 January 2017.

The MTG has a mandate to ensure that its collections and programmes are accessible and affordable to the Hawke’s Bay community, says Sally Jackson, Manager Visitor Experiences for Napier City Council.

”Lowering the schools programme fees will very likely see a rise in our visitor numbers – and higher numbers through the doors means better engagement with the facility, local kids who feel more connected to our region’s history, and increased word of mouth recommendations.”

MTG Hawke’s Bay has secured central government funding of $82,190 annually for three years, in order to meet the costs of its Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom programmes.

Council also approved extra funding to be provided from capital reserves to go into improving Marine Parade, as well as the redeveloped Napier Conference Centre. There will be $200,000 provided for the new Marine Parade skate complex – which will be named Bay Skate - in order to construct safe skating ramps to meet health and safety obligations. Shade sails and outdoor furniture have also been added to the design at a cost of $45,000.

The Napier Conference Centre will also receive additional funding of $745,864.

Councillor Keith Price, Chair of Infrastructure and Strategy says, “The additional funding was requested because of time delays due to adverse weather conditions as well as an increase in the scope of the project, including new seating in the outdoor areas, more stringent safety requirements and better bathroom facilities. We believe the investment is more than worthwhile. The Napier Conference Centre is Hawke’s Bay’s primary conference venue returning significant economic impact to the Napier community. In the 2013/14 financial year the combined annual Conference Centre operational and visitor spend activities was approximately $15 million which is huge for Hawke’s Bay. We need to get this right – our community has high expectations around the quality of the upgrade and we always have this top of mind.”
